Totara

Totara is a long‑lived native tree known for its durable timber and stately form.

Appearance:

• Dark green, needle‑like leaves
• Thick, furrowed bark
• Large, spreading crown

Growth:

• Leaves 1–2 cm long, stiff and sharp
• Can grow 20–30 m tall
• Trunk diameter often exceeds 2 m

Uses:

Totara is valued for its strong timber and ecological role in native forests.

For regeneration and restoration projects, Totara is well-suited to establish in dry, flood-free zones and can be effective for planting on erodible hillslopes.

Cultural & Historical Notes:

Totara wood was traditionally used by Māori for waka (canoes), carvings, and buildings.
