Mingimingi, Coprosma propinqua var. propinquais, is a native shrub with small leaves and a dense, wiry structure.
Appearance:
- Tiny, rounded leaves
- Dense, wiry branches
- Small berries eaten by birds
Growth:
- Leaves 2–5 mm long
- Grows 1–2 m tall
- Tolerates dry and windy conditions
Uses:
Useful for hedges and as a low‑maintenance native groundcover.
For regeneration and restoration projects, Mingimingi is a well‑suited native species to plant along wetland edges, on both lower and upper banks, and in floodplains.
Cultural & Historical Notes:
Mingimingi berries were traditionally used by Māori as a food source and the plant was also used extensively in rongoā (medicinally).
