Māpou is a native shrub with reddish stems and leathery leaves, often used in native plantings.
Appearance:
- Dark green leaves with red veins
- Compact, bushy form
- Reddish stems
Growth:
- Leaves 3–7 cm long
- Grows 2–4 m tall
- Tolerates wind and sun
Uses:
Used in shelterbelts and for slope stabilisation and provides habitat for native insects.
For regeneration and restoration projects, Māpou is a valuable native species that grows well in areas that are mostly dry but may get wet during seasonal floods. It also performs strongly on dry banks and hillslopes.
Cultural & Historical Notes:
Māpou has traditional uses in Māori rongoā (medicine) and is associated with strength and protection. It is considered a rākau tapu (sacred tree).
