Kōwhai

Kōwhai is a beloved native tree known for its brilliant yellow flowers and graceful form.

Appearance:

• Fine, feathery leaves
• Striking yellow blooms that attract tūī and other birds

Growth:

• Leaves 5–15 cm long, pinnate
• Grows 5–12 m tall
• Tolerates seasonal flooding

Uses:

Popular in landscaping and ecological restoration for its beauty and bird‑attracting qualities.

For regeneration and restoration projects, Kōwhai is well-suited for planting in the secondary stage on upper riverbanks and floodplains that are typically dry but subject to seasonal flooding, as well as in dry zones extending up to hillslopes.

Kōwhai is celebrated in Māori tradition and used in natural dyes and rongoā (medicine).
